15 Jan 2008 - January newsletter

Welcome to all our new parents and children across the school. This is our regular monthly newsletter where we aim to inform parents about events and meetings both in school and the wider community. Please check book bags on a regular basis, as more detailed information concerning such events will come home separately.

We welcome too, Mrs Matthews who is working in Mrs O’Neill class and just to confuse everyone, Ms Bain in Mrs Bains' class!

There are also three new faces on the lunchtime team; these are Mrs Seatherton, Miss White and Mrs Maddocks.

School Photos

The Tempest school photographer will be in school on Tuesday 5th February. All children will have individual photos taken during the school day. If you wish to have family photos with older children from the junior or senior schools, then you are welcome to come into school from 8.30am. If you wish to have infant school siblings photographed together in addition to their individual photos, again we shall do this during the school day. Proofs will be sent home, but there is no obligation to buy.

Tarka Tennis

We shall be taking the whole school to Tarka Tennis Centre on Wednesday 13th February for a multiskills activity morning. Coaches will be leaving at 9.30am prompt. Coaches will be returning at 12.30pm and lunches will be slightly later than normal.

Toys

A gentle reminder to new parents, that only reception children are allowed to bring in one toy as an aid to settling in. This must be small enough to fit into a pocket and named to save any upsets!

Parent and Toddler group

Hollyoak will be starting a parent and toddler group on Wednesday afternoons from 1.30pm to 3.00pm. Please call 01769 572188 for more details.

Spectrum

A group for mixed heritage families meet every fourth Saturday of the month at Victoria House in Barnstaple between 1.30pm and 3.30pm. If you would like further details, please ring Emma on 01271 375803 or 01271 321411

Books for Babies

The session dates for this term are as follows:

 11/02  25/02  10/03  31/03

This is a free group for parents and pre-school children to meet over a coffee and read books etc with their children.

Bad Weather

As a timely reminder, in the event of bad weather please listen to Radio Devon or Radio Lantern for any school transport cancellations or school closure notices. As our staff come from all directions, a decision may not be made until 8.30am to close the school. Therefore please check that the school will be open, by listening to the radio before leaving home.

Thank you.

Attendance

Could all parents please note that if your child will not be in school for any reason, please inform the class teacher beforehand or ring the school office and let us know on the first morning of absence. Late arrivals to school must report to the school office, as the classroom doors will be locked. Thank you.

School Meals

As a small reminder to parents, school dinners cost £1.75 per day which is £8.75 per week, as there are still a few parents still paying at the old rate. It would be really helpful if this could be paid weekly on a Monday morning in a named envelope.

If you currently pay for meals and think you may be entitled to free school meals, please ask at the office for a form.

 Morning routine

We encourage all children to develop independent skills in a safe environment. In order to achieve this, please encourage your child to be responsible for their book bag, lunch box and choice of activity before the 9.05am registration bell. We hope that all parents support this aim.
